UNLV RESEARCH: CLEAN INDOOR AIR ACT HAS NOT NEGATIVELY IMPACTED CLARK COUNTY ECONOMY
Key Local Economic Outcomes From Before and After Passage of Statewide Smoking Ban Found to be Consistent with General Economic Trends
LAS VEGAS – April 20, 2009 – A preliminary analysis of key economic indicators before and after the passage of the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act (NCIAA) in 2006 reveals that the act has had very little negative economic impact in Clark County.
An interdisciplinary UNLV research team tracked data from 1999 through the first quarter of 2009 on restaurant and bar employment rates, openings, taxable sales, slot gaming revenues and slot tax collections in Clark County. The team compared quarterly based annual trends for each of the economic outcomes over the 10-year period, taking into account seasonal effects and general economic trends. . . | News Release

PARENTS OF OVERWEIGHT CHILDREN FAIL TO RECOGNIZE RISK FACTORS OF CHILDHOOD OBESITY, UNLV STUDY FINDS
UNLV Nursing Researchers Analyzed Global Research to Identify Why Parents Often Misperceive How Much Their Children Weigh
LAS VEGAS – April 15, 2009 – A new study by UNLV nursing researchers revealed that most parents – especially those who are overweight – fail to accurately perceive their children’s weight and risk factors for obesity and may be contributing to this growing childhood epidemic.
With one in three U.S. children either at risk for or overweight, UNLV researchers investigated why an apparent disconnect exists between how parents perceive their children’s weight and their actual weight. The study, which appears in the March 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, summarized data and identified trends from 20 quantitative research studies in the U.S., Italy, Australia and the United Kingdom over the past 10 years on parental perceptions of childhood obesity. . . | News Release

FOREIGN NURSES CAN SLIP INTO COMMUNICATION GAP
Baffled by reference to grits, confused about the graveyard shift
Las Vegas Sun March 10, 2009 It’s not politically correct — but it’s a frequent complaint of hospital patients in Las Vegas: “The nurses don’t speak English!”
The complaint is inaccurate. Foreign nurses working in Las Vegas do speak English. All have passed English language competency exams to become licensed in Nevada.
But the complaint also contains an element of truth. More than 15 percent of the Las Vegas nursing workforce is internationally trained, about five times the national average of 3.5 percent, according to an expert at UNLV. Most of these nurses are from Asian countries — the Philippines, India, Japan and Korea. Their English is often heavily accented and they may not understand the nuances of American culture and lingo — which can create challenges for patients and doctors . . . | News Link

UNLV STUDY FINDS POOR AIR QUALITY PERSISTS IN SOME CASINO RESTAURANTS DESPITE CLEAN INDOOR AIR ACT
UNLV and University of Kentucky Researchers Tested Indoor Air Quality in 16 Casino Restaurants and Gaming Areas in Southern Nevada
LAS VEGAS – January 6, 2009 – More than two years after Nevada voters passed legislation banning smoking in a majority of the state’s indoor public places and all of its restaurants, researchers from UNLV and the University of Kentucky have found that restaurants in some Southern Nevada casinos still contain unsafe levels of secondhand smoke.
With the close proximity of non-smoking restaurants to smoking-allowed gaming areas, UNLV assistant professor of nursing Nancy York and Kiyoung Lee, associate professor of public health at the University of Kentucky, measured air quality samples from 16 casinos in Southern Nevada to gauge the relationship between overall indoor air quality and restaurant air quality. . . | News Release

UNLV SCHOOL OF NURSING OFFERS PREVENTATIVE TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE IN THE SUN THIS SUMMER
LAS VEGAS – March 24, 2008 – Skin cancer is on the rise throughout the nation, affecting people of every age and ethnic group. With more than 300 sunny days on average in Southern Nevada each year, area residents are at increased risk of developing malignant melanoma, a cancer of the body’s pigment-producing cells.
“Everyone in the community should be aware of the harmful effects of sun exposure,” says UNLV Nursing instructor Susan VanBeuge, who educates healthcare professionals nationwide on screening for skin cancers. “Those who spend a lot of time in the sun should be particularly aware, but it’s important to note that normal daily activities such as driving and yard work can result in accumulated exposure and be just as harmful in the long term.”  . . . | News Release

UNLV NURSING PROFESSOR TO INVESTIGATE ROLE OF INFLAMMATORY CELLS IN MUSCLE RECOVERY: Interdisciplinary Study Funded Though Inaugural UNLV President’s Research Award
LAS VEGAS–October 3, 2007–UNLV School of Nursing Professor Barbara St. Pierre Schneider and an interdisciplinary team of researchers are investigating how macrophages–immune cells critical to the inflammatory response–contribute to muscle injury repair, work that may lead to new therapies that speed muscle recovery and reduce the high cost of rehabilitation.
Macrophages originate in the bone marrow as immature cells, and, upon injury, migrate to injured tissues. Once inside injured tissue, macrophages mature, remove damaged cells and may perform functions that promote muscle cell regeneration. St. Pierre Schneider and colleagues plan to study muscle-related factors that induce immature macrophages to mature, with a goal of gaining a greater understanding of how these inflammatory cells contribute to muscle repair . . . | News Release
