Ms. Cheryl A. Maes is the MSN Coordinator and lecturer/clinical instructor at the School of Nursing.  She teaches full-time in the graduate program.  She received her BSN in 1992 and MSN in 1999 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  She currently teaches Advanced Physical Assessment (NURS 703), and the clinical portions of Primary Care of the Family I, II, and III (NURS 749, NURS 759, NURS 769).      
Ms. Maes’ clinical expertise includes medical surgical nursing, public health nursing, and primary care in family medicine.  Since 2000, she has held a national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.  She maintains a clinical practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner at a private family medicine physician office in Henderson, NV.  Ms. Maes’ Master’s thesis focused on Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, Perceived Risk of HIV/AIDS, and At-Risk Behaviors among Older Adults.  Her thesis was accepted for publication in the November 2003 Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.  She continues to focus her research on sexuality among older adults and recently investigated Nurse Practitioners Sexual History Taking Practices with Adults 50 and Older.  The findings from this study was presented at the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing 18th International Nursing Research Congress Focusing on Evidence-Based Practice in Vienna, Austria in July 2007.  Other research interests include health promotion and disease prevention.  She is aiming to begin studies toward a PhD in Nursing in the Summer 2010.   

In addition to her teaching role, Ms. Maes serves as the Secretary for the School of Nursing Alumni Association, Awards Chair for Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing Zeta Kappa Chapter, and Secretary for the School of Nursing Faculty Affairs Council.  Besides being a member of the STTI Zeta Kappa Chapter, she is also a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, National League of Nursing, American Nurses Association, and the Nevada Nurses Association.  She was inducted into the Empire Who’s Who Empowering Executives and Professionals Inc. 2004-2005 Registry.
