Dr. Barbara St. Pierre Schneider is an associate professor and associate dean for research. She teaches the online course, Preparing and Submitting a Grant Application, in the graduate program, and oversees the SON Graduate Assistantship program.
As associate dean for research, Dr. Schneider provides leadership for the School of Nursing’s research mission. This role includes developing a research infrastructure and support system, working closely with faculty and doctoral students to develop viable research proposals, mentoring faculty regarding research programs, identifying and assisting in gathering research resources, and developing collaborative research relationships for faculty and the School.
Dr. Schneider’s program of research focuses on the leukocyte response to exercise-related skeletal muscle injury. The long-term goal of this research is to strengthen the knowledge base about the functional capacities of leukocytes in exercise-injured skeletal muscle and to contribute to the field of gender-specific physiology in the context of exercise and exercise-induced muscle injury. Her research has two foci: (a) to determine which leukocytes infiltrate exercise-injured muscle, and (b) to investigate the influence of host factors, such as age, sex and ovarian hormones, on leukocyte infiltration in exercise-injured muscle. Findings from these studies could ultimately serve as evidence leading to a modified approach in treating sports-related muscle injuries, particularly in women. She has received competitive intramural and extramural funds to support this research and has published research reports and other articles in nursing, physiology, and sports medicine journals.
Dr. Schneider has been a grant reviewer for Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. She has also reviewed manuscripts for several journals, including the American Journal of Physiology, Biological Research for Nursing, and British Journal for Sports Medicine. Currently, Dr. Schneider is serving as a guest editor for the Skeletal Muscle Biology issue of Biological Research for Nursing. Additionally, she serves as a member of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses Research Committee and UNLV School of Nursing Research Affairs Council and School of Dental Medicine Research Committee.
