Nurses interested in enrolling in a nurse educator degree or certificate program should consider the following when selecting a program:
  • The level of educational preparation recommended for the nurse educator role sought. For example:
    • Master's degree or certificate in education for staff development/client education
    • Master's degree for teaching in diploma or associate degree schools of nursing or as clinical instructors in baccalaureate and higher degree programs
    • PhD, EdD, DNSc, DPH for baccalaureate and higher degree programs
    • Post-master's or post-doctorate certificate for teaching in schools of nursing for graduates without an education background
  • Type of program to match the needs of the working nurse
    • On-campus weekend or evening courses
    • Course offerings in intensive format
    • Distance education offerings
    • Online, web-based programs
    • Combined on-campus with online programs
  • Costs of the program
