Q: What type of doctorate degree(s) do you offer at UNLV?
A: Currently, a PhD in Nursing is being offered.
Q: How many credits do I need to take to complete my degree program?
A: If you already have an MSN degree in a nurse educator track you will be expected to complete 53 credits. If you have a master’s degree in another area of concentration you will need to complete 65 credits to obtain your doctorate degree.
Q: How often do you admit students into your program?
A: Students are admitted into the program annually and begin classes in the fall semester.
Q: Do I need to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) to apply for admissions into the PhD program?
A: Yes, the GRE is a requirement and must have been taken within 5 years of making application to our program.
Q: What kind of scores do I need to make on the GRE to be considered for admissions into your program?
A: You must present competitive scores on the verbal, quantitative and analytic measures.
Q: What are the requirements for admissions into your doctorate program?
A: Basically you must have a BSN and an MSN from accredited schools of nursing. If you have a master’s degree in a health related discipline and a BSN from accredited institution you may apply for admission to our program. You must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in your master’s degree program, and have a “B” or better in a graduate research and statistics course. Additionally, you must be eligible for licensure as an RN in Nevada.
Q: When is the application for admissions due to the Graduate College?
A: You will have to submit all required application materials to the Graduate College by March 1st.
Q: How do I apply for admission to the program?
A: Go to URL - http://graduatecollege.unlv.edu. The on-line application form can be found at Admissions>Domestic or International>How to Apply.
Q: How long will it take me to obtain my PhD degree?
A: If you take classes as a full-time student you can complete the program in three years. As a part-time student it will take you approximately 4 years.
Q: How many credits do I need to take per semester to be considered a full-time student?
A: Nine credits per semester.
Q: How long do I have to complete the program?
A: You must complete all course work and your dissertation within six years.
Q: Do I have to attend weekly classes on campus throughout the program?
A: No, you will be expected to be on campus each fall semester for several days during the week prior to the beginning of the fall semester classes.
Q: Can I take classes in the PhD program year-round or only during the fall and spring semesters?
A: The PhD program is designed so that you can take classes year-round.
Q: How do I select a chairperson for my dissertation committee?
A: It is highly recommended that you select a chair based on the faculty’s area of research expertise. Faculty with full appointment to the graduate college is eligible to chair your dissertation committee.
Q: Will I have the opportunity to be involved in research while in the doctorate program?
A: Yes, doctorate students are expected to participate in research with faculty.
